During the preparation of Issue 28, Historic Masters received the very sad news of the death of Richard Bebb, Chairman of the Historic Masters Committee.

Richard was the inspiration and, in a very real sense, the driving force behind the concept of Historic Masters – both in its original form as a project of the British Institute of Recorded Sound and subsequently as an independent company. The countless hours he spent on researching catalogues and lists enabled us to unearth many rarities, including hitherto unknown matrices, in the EMI Archive.

Over a period of thirty years since the first issue in the early 1970′s, Richard’s enthusiasm and commitment never wavered.

Towards the end of his life, he was particularly excited by the discovery of metal parts for the Tamango recordings in the DG Archive and he was looking forward eagerly to their release by Historic Masters.

All those actively involved with Historic Masters will miss his commitment, knowledge and above all the enthusiasm, which for over thirty years has guided and inspired our activities.

Stanley Henig, Secretary and Managing Director – Historic Masters
